Liahona Bikes 05 Jul 2004
Compared to what you can purchase in Japan the Liahona is miles ahead. I was in the office in 1999 - 2001 and sold many of them. The only fault I found is the $450 bike has a tendancy to have the crank arm loosen and if the missionary continues to ride it that way it will ruin the crank arm (usually on the left side) and it will have to be replaced. The $750 bike has a spline so it does not happen with that one.

Bicycle 05 Jul 2004
To Steve's question: We have a son entering the MTC July 7 to serve in the JTSM and asked the same question. The advice we got was to buy in the US and ship. We bought a bike through Liahona Bike Company and I think we got a quality bike at a reasonable price. You should look there and, with your bike shop experience, tell the rest of us if that is so.

bicycle 03 Jul 2004
I have recently received my mission call to the Japan Tokyo South Mission and would like to get a general idea of whether or not to purchase my bike here or wait until I get to Tokyo. Since I work in a bike shop and could get a good bike for the money, I still would have to pay about 300 for shipping. Are there bikes in Tokyo for someone who is 6'4". Thanks, Steve

Mission Advice 06 Jun 2004
Dear RMs:

I would appreciate your help in answering one simple question, “If I had to serve all over again…”

While I was recently teaching my seminary class of Juniors and Seniors, I was asked by a student the question, “If you had to serve all over again, what would you do differently?” I responded with a few of my regrets and we engaged in a conversation about regrets that different people had mentioned to this student. I initially began this endeavor by talking to a few returned missionaries in my ward about some of the regrets that they had as they looked back on their mission experience. I was amazed at the vastly different answers that each person came up with. The more I talked to people, the more interesting it became, which has led to research and inquiries on a broader scale.

What I am requesting of you is a simple response to the question, “If I had to serve all over again…” Your answers could take the form of a short paragraph, a sentence or two, or even a page or so of an experience that has permanently remained with you.

For example, one person remarked that when he first got transferred to an area he was called as the District Leader. At the next transfers, he was assigned a new companion and the Zone Leader called his new companion as the new District Leader, not him. He was upset at this decision and, despite his new companion having no experience as a leader in the mission, refused to help or give any assistance to his new companion. Whenever his companion would ask for help, he would tell his companion that he {his new companion}was now the District Leader and to figure it out. He told me that experience with his companion has always bothered him and if he could serve all over again, he would do all that he could to help and assist his companions in any calling in order to help them become better missionaries.

If I do decide to publish this, you are free at the end of your response to the question to list how you want your identification to look. You are free to put your full name (So far, I have had several people tell me that they will respond to this only if they can have their name and mission published), you can just provide your initials, or you can list it as ‘name withheld.” However, the most important part is to specify what mission you served in. This is important because I want these answers to reflect experiences from around the world.

The following is a guide to answering the question. However, feel free to write on anything that answers the question, “If I had to serve all over again…” Also, if you want to include more than one response, please feel free. I ask that any response to this request be emailed to the email address listed at the bottom. Also, please state your name, address (in case of publication) and a short statement stating that I have your permission to publish this.

Missionary work 24 May 2004
Having been in the Church just four years before serving a mission and spending those four years in the military the mission was a great experience. During that time I had the opportunity to teach others about the Gospel and learn much more myself. As a result of that special experience I made a decision that missionary work was not only my responsibility but my blessing. During the time since my first mission we made a decision that my wife and I would serve missions together. They have been great experiences. First the Northern States Mission 1959 - 1961, Japan Tokyo South 1999-2001, and presently Arizona Phoenix Mission. We hope to continue to serve and would like to do at least one more mission while our health permits. Even with some changes that might have been made a mission is a great experience. Is it easy? No, but work the effort and the changes that come to us as individuals as well as the blessing it is to others that we influence while serving.

Mission Advice 13 May 2004
Dear RMs,

I am currently putting together a short missionary book at the request of some of my seminary students. I would appreciate your help in answering one simple question, “If I had to serve all over again…”
